Hayley, Dad, and de Starke Keltje

Here is my latest favorite e-letter from my dad.

Dad, 83, had a stroke 5 years ago that wrecked part of his brain, including short term memory, peripheral vision, and occasionally the ability to grasp types of humor he used to propagate.

Nonetheless, a good deal of the time, Dad fascinates and delights me with his insights, his long-ago memories. Here he writes to my son-in-law, responding to a letter from Jay about my daughter Hayley.

Jay;

Congratulations to Hayley for winning 10 mile Minneapolis race I probably should also offer congrats to the entire Morgan family. I like the expression :Hayley "The Strong". It's the same word in Flemish Dutch, I spent the 7th with my uncle Peter in Harrison Wisconsin. I spent my 7th grade with his family and when ever I rode with him to Rhinelander where he took the daily product of his 35 cow dairy every time we passed a farm where a huge girl was usually forking manure into a spreader, he would always slow do own, waive to her and say "what a starke keltje". Never sure of the spelling but understood clearly what it meant.

Even Dutch dairy farmers appreciated a strong woman.

Would love to keep up with Midwest branch of the Jay Morgan family now that we are back in CA. Although we both also have computers in Minnesota, I never seem to have the time to use mine as I do here in CA So you should hear from me each time you or hayley or Decker or Hannahlorre write.

Love to all from the CA Branch of Grand Father and Grart Great Grandfather and granddi

Subject: Hayley takes 1st place in 10mi race!

Hayley die Starke won 1st place for Women (all age groups) today in a 10-mile race in the Twin Cities. She took 8th place overall. So, she also beat everyone in her age group, 20-29, which is impressive on its own.

When we first talked about plans for Jay, Decker, Hannelore meeting her at the race, she said something like, "...well, it ends at 9:15a, but hopefully I'll be there to get my trophy." And, that's the way it went.
